Market cap

Cross-asset comparator

What would asset A's price be if it had asset B's market cap? Type a symbol (BTC, AAPL), ticker, or name — pick from the dropdown.

How market cap works

Market capitalization tells you how much the market thinks an asset is worth in total. It's the single most useful number for comparing assets across categories — whether Apple is larger than all of Ethereum, or whether Bitcoin has overtaken the major banks.

The formula is the same everywhere: price × supply. What changes is what counts as "supply." For stocks it's shares outstanding — the number of shares a company has issued. For crypto it's circulating supply — the number of coins actually in the market (not burned, not locked, not held by the protocol).

Market cap is not the same as "money invested" or "value created." It's a snapshot: if every holder tried to sell right now, they wouldn't each get the last quoted price. Treat it as a relative size indicator, not an exit value.

Frequently asked

What is market cap?

Market capitalization is the total value of an asset — price per unit multiplied by the number of units in circulation. For a stock, it's share price times shares outstanding. For crypto, it's the coin's price times its circulating supply.

How is market cap calculated?

Market cap = price × circulating supply. For a stock at $100 with 1 billion shares outstanding, the market cap is $100 billion. For Bitcoin at $60,000 with 19 million coins in circulation, the market cap is $1.14 trillion.

What's the difference between market cap and fully diluted valuation (FDV)?

Market cap uses the currently circulating supply. FDV uses the maximum possible supply — for Bitcoin, that's 21 million coins. For tokens with a fixed cap, FDV is the ceiling valuation; for tokens with unlimited supply (like Ethereum), FDV doesn't apply.

How often are prices updated?

Crypto prices update in real time via Binance's public WebSocket (≈1-second latency). Stock prices refresh on a round-robin cycle — roughly every 9 minutes per ticker — within Finnhub's free-tier quota.
